Sudhalkar Eye Hospital was started as “Eye Clinic” in 1950 by Late Professor Emeritus Dr. Mukund S. Sudhalkar. He was born in 1921 and completed his Ophthalmology residency from J.J. hospital Grant Medical College in Bombay in 1948. He joined the Medical College and SSG Hospital Baroda as Honorary refractionist and assistant professor in 1952 and retired as Honorary Professor and Head, Ophthalmology department in 1979. During his tenure as Professor and Head, M.S. Ophthalmology course was started for the first time in Baroda Medical College, and M. S. University.

He was a founder member of Baroda Lions Club, Main since its inception in 1957. He became chairman, sight conservation committee and president later on. He organised and conducted the first Eye Camp in Jambughoda in rural area of Panchmahal district in 1962. He went on doing this philanthropic activity till 1979 and wrote a book on how to conduct an Eye Camp to help the organisers. The book was later translated in Gujarati by Hon assist. Prof. Dr. Anand Sudhalkar in 1987. The book was recognised and accepted by Government of Gujarat for circulation amongst all primary health centres and referral hospitals.

Prof. Dr. M. S. Sudhalkar was a very successful ophthalmologist in Baroda and was proficient in the art of cataract, squint and oculoplastic surgeries. He became the president of Gujarat Ophthalmological society in 1972 and was actively involved in academic upliftment of the ophthalmic community of Baroda and Gujarat. Dr. M. S. Sudhalkar died at the age of 60 in 1982.

Dr. Anand Sudhalkar was born in 1952 and graduated MBBS in 1974. He completed his ophthalmology residency and senior residency in 1979, passing M.S. Ophthalmology in 1978. He then did Retinal fellowship at Retina Foundation Ahmedabad in 1980 and joined his father, Dr. M.S. Sudhalkar in private practice.

Dr. Anand Sudhalkar was appointed as Honorary Assist. Professor of ophthalmology, at Medical College Baroda on 30th September 1980. He became post graduate teacher and examiner foe M.S. Ophthalmology in 1987. He left the institute in 1997 to devote more time in Sudhalkar Eye Hospital, Mahajan’s Lane Baroda.

Dr. Anand Sudhalkar is practicing as Phacoemulsification micro-surgeon and Retinal surgeon with state of art machinery.
